No title is good enough.

I thought of a million titles but nothing clearly describes the level of excitement. Nothing can even come close. I was walking about 2 inches off the ground.

I got a new spindle.

I know, that in itself isn’t exactly anything to get all excited about. I get new spindles probably too frequently. And in the shop I’m surrounded by litereally 100 or so. This one is different. I carried this spindle with me all day Monday after I got home from work. I totally would have had it with me all the time since then if I didn’t have to work and I wasn’t afraid to hurt it.

This spindle is the coolest spindle on the planet earth. No, don’t try and argue with me. There is no spindle that you have that could possibly match up to my wonderous spindle. Nope, not a single one. Mine is the best and I will hear nothing else.

That’s right
It’s a skull and crossbones spindle.
Tom at Golding spindle made it for me. I never really had a desire for a Golding. Weird I know. They are all lovely but that’s just it, they were lovely. Nothing really reached out and grabbed me. I’ve been dreaming of a custom spindle for a long time. Sarah suggested I contact Golding to have them do a custom.

I’m so positively thrilled that I asked for this spindle to be created. And I’m even more thrilled that Tom and his painter did such an amazing job on it. It’s not a cutesie pretty skull, it’s a skull. It’s my skull and crossbones spindle. I’ve never named a spindle before but this one can’t just be called “you know, the spindle with a skull on it”. His name is Sparrow.

Husbeast was teasing me and saying if he ever needed to get my attention he’d be holding Sparrow hostage. I don’t think he’s very funny. It made me just hug Sparrow a little tighter.

I’ve of course been spinning on Sparrow when I get a free moment (not that there are many around here). The fiber you see behind Sparrow isfrom Indigo moon Fibers. It’s the last batt I bought from her and it will be a Lady Eleanor for Scarf Style. I loved the one that <a href=””>Amy</a&gt; made and have been itching to make one myself. I’ll get all 9 ounces of this batt spun up into a sport weight single and then I’ll go to it.

You’re right! That is the coolest spindle ever! It makes me want to learn to use one so I have an excuse to get one too. Don’t you love it when what you’ve imagined comes out even better than what you expected?

Holy CRAP. That is The. Best. Spindle.

  4. Weaver says:

I’ve felt the same way about the Golding spindles, so beautiful but not really for me.

Sparrow is absolutely stunning! You’ll have to find a good hiding space, so that the husband can’t spindle-nap him.

  5. Marnie says:

I so love Golding spindles. They spin forever. But this is just badass! The detail is exceptional. Really amazing. What’s the weight and diameter of this baby? Is it well balanced?

  6. Norma says:

I love my Goldings. I must admit, I do not get the appeal of the skull and crossbones, but I’m glad it gives you such joy. :)

  7. Adrian says:

  11. beadslut says:

I don’t spin, and yet, I covet. Sparrow is very very cool. I think he’s found the right owner, too!

hands down, sparrow IS the coolest spindle EVER!

I am simply black with envy.

  13. Beth says:

That would be enough to get Jack himself spinning!

BTW – isn’t there something about having an amazing artist do a custom job for you that puts a smile on your face? ;)

  14. Rebekah says:

that’s so cool to have a custom spindle. I bet there’s not a one like it on whole planet, and a true original is so cool.

May Sparrow spin like a dream for you.

  15. Dianna says:

OK. Now I HAVE to get your skull needles to you so you can knit the stuff you spun with Sparrow! Way Boogie, Amy!

  16. PuppyMomma says:

I still say you should name him Lyle or something.

  17. Amy says:

Holy CRAP!!!! That is the coolest spindle on the planet!! I am beyond jealous. And Sparrow is the perfect name. I have never wanted to spin on a spindle so bad in my whole life!!!ELEVENTY-ONE

  18. Bron says:

omigosh…for that I’d actually learn to spin!

  19. Wendy says:

Great spindle! And I’m seriously tempted to join you all on the Eleanor bandwagon. I love that shawl, but have been intimidated by having to buy/make that much worsted weight. But if I can do it in sport…I have plenty of fiber, god knows!

And thanks for the Fiber Club and the Blue Moon yarn. It is perfect for the DD’s teacher socks. Even DD agrees!

  20. Sara says:

Oh my gosh… that spindle is so awesome!!

I have a non-skull Golding which I love. Happy Spinning!

  22. Elabeth says:

Holy CRAP! That kicks so much ass!

  23. Haddy says:

Sparrow is amazing! THE BEST spindle EVER! WOW! Beautiful!

  24. Gina House says:

EEEEEE!!! That is absolutely the most unique and beautiful spindle I’ve ever seen. I am so jealous! Will you be spinning some sort of “skull-ish” fiber on it? Golding should seriously start selling these! Lucky!!!!

  25. Lori says:

That is the most rad spindle ever! I have a feeling Golding will be inundated with requests!

  26. Jennifer says:

Sparrow is one fantastic spindle! That is too cool.

  27. Mia says:

I love it!!!!! I want one too but first I need to work on my drafting skills. But maybe this would help me….

    And no holding Sparrow hostage!!!!

  28. unRooly says:

Oh. My. God. That is the COOLEST EVER!!! I am so insanely jealous right now!! I sell fiber and drop spindles in a booth at a renaissance faire… you have no idea (or maybe you do) how insane the people there would go over something like that. You’d be able to feed a small country if a raffle was done for one of those suckers. *bows in awe*

  29. spyderkl says:

I’ve never saw a Golding spindle I liked until just now. That is amazing! How’s it spin?

  30. Michelle says:

  34. MerryPurl says:

I don’t like spindles with images and I twitch when I see the butterfly ones (apologies to those of you who have one and like it) but that is one cool spindle and yes, I’m jealous.

  35. DeeAnn says:

It’s just so absolutely perfect for you that no comment does it justice either!

  36. Riin says:

    Whoa! That is cool!

  37. shannon says:

okay, that’s the best spindle ever. the goldings live about fifteen minutes away from me…i suppose in vermont that counts as “right around the corner.” i stopped in for a visit once, because i couldn’t help myself, and got a tour of the workshop. wow. wow. someday when i’m not a starving artist, but a well-fed one, i want one of his amazing wheels. sigh. anyway, love the design!

  38. Annalea says:

While I’m not a skull & crossbones fanatic, I can see plainly that is one gorgeously made spindle. I’ve been trying to figure out where to start with spindles (I’ve made my own from a dowel & toy wheel, but it leaves much to be desired), and thought of this post. So, I thought I’d come see if you had any suggestions on a good spindle. (If you don’t have time, I understand.) You definitely know spinning, and spindles. :o) I’m looking for something with a wobble-free spin that’s good for a beginner, and that’s well made.

Thanks so much for the pretty pictures. :o)
