Crochet

You knew that I could crochet right? I learned to crochet before I knit. Gram loves to crochet and I mostly love to knit. Lately my crochet love has returned full force.
I did that Twilight cowl in December and immediately started another which I finished recently:

And in the meantime worked on some free form to make an owl for a potholder:

He was a total joy to hook. Freeform. I love it. And that brings us to the project at hand. I saw this coat:

On this blog. If you go to that blog you will see another version that someone crocheted with squares and all zig zag. It was killing me all day yesterday until finally I dug into my stash, ripped a project and cast on using that yarn. I am starting with the squares and I want my jacket to look like this:

I’m using my fabulous leather jacket as a guide. I don’t have a photo of that jacket but I’ll take one as I continue on with this project. The leather is gorgeous but heavy and gorgeous and I could use a yarny version of it. Anyway, 3 squares is right mid sleeve across the back. If you see my photo above, I drew on my table about how it should be. And the front the squares should rest just above the girls. Yes, I understand how that will look and I’m ok with that.

I haven’t decided how it will all go together. Free form is fun and inventive. There will be straight aways that may be boring but I plan to employ a bunch of different stitches and handspun yarns to make it interesting. I have a lot of handspun yarn in this color range that is all about the same weight:

That’s not even all my yarns but the ones that I picked out for this jacket. I’m going to wind up all the hanks today and get working on it. In fact, if you catch me at the shop today you might find me working on it….

If you want to make this with me, I’ll keep posting notes. The squares were just simple squares. They’re not typical grannies. I went looking for a pattern to give you good direction and found THIS site. Now I’m wishing I had done stars or something else fancier. I may have to do that for the sleeve squares or the squares at the hem.

So get yourself a coat or a sweater to measure it up and start making squares! I’m trying to figure out how I want them to look, I’ll make notes for you when I figure it out.
